Setting up an ODBC Data Source Name (DSN)

Introduction

There are three types of ODBC DSN:

DSN Type	Description
User	Visible only to the user that created the DSN. Can be created and configured without administrator privileges.
System	Visible to all users on a computer. Requires administrator privileges to create and configure.
File	Information about the connection is stored in a ".dsn" file.

Selecting the most appropriate type of ODBC DSN depends on your requirements:

To connect a desktop application, such as Microsoft Excel, set up an ODBC User DSN.
To connect a software program running under a different user account, for example SQL Server, you must set up an ODBC System DSN.
If you have multiple different users on the same computer, set up one ODBC System DSN. The one ODBC System DSN can be shared by all users.
