Introduction

UaExpert is a general purpose test client for OPC UA Servers. You can obtain UaExpert from Unified Automation using this link:

https://www.unified-automation.com/products/development-tools/uaexpert.html.

This tutorial guides you through the steps needed to connect UaExpert to Fernhill SCADA.

Connect UaExpert to Fernhill SCADA

Follow the instructions in Enable the OPC UA Server to make sure the OPC UA Server is running. When Fernhill SCADA is installed for the first time, the OPC UA Server is not enabled. This follows good security principles of only running services that are needed.

Follow these steps to connect UaExpert to Fernhill SCADA:

  1. Run the Fernhill SCADA Server Monitor Tool:

    Make a note of the OPC UA Server Endpoint value of your server. This will be needed to create the OPC UA Connection to Fernhill SCADA in step 5.

  2. Start UaExpert:

    Unified Automation UaExpert.

  3. In the Project window, right click on Servers, then select Add...:

  4. Click the Advanced tab:

  5. Enter this information:

    FieldValue
    Configuration Name Fernhill SCADA
    Endpoint Url The OPC UA Server Endpoint from step 1
    Security Policy Basic256Sha256
    Message Security Mode Sign & Encrypt
    Authentication Settings Username Password
    Username Your user name
    Password Your password

    Note: If you are connecting to Fernhill SCADA running on a Linux computer that does not support PAM, set Authentication Settings to Anonymous.

    For example:

    The Add Server dialog of UaExpert with the Advanced tag configured to connect to Fernhill SCADA.

  6. Click OK. The connection should now be visible in the Project window:

    If you need to make changes to the connection, right click the Fernhill SCADA connection and select Properties.

  7. Right click on the Fernhill SCADA connection and select Connect. The Address Space window should now show the OPC UA Nodes in Fernhill SCADA:

    UaExpert now connected to Fernhill SCADA.
