Introduction

This page is a guide for setting up the SMTP Connector Tag to work with your email provider. These topics are covered:

Email Provider Settings

Before you begin configuring the SMTP Connector Tag, get this information from your email provider:

SettingDescription
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) The host name of the outgoing mail server. For example: smtp.example.com.
Port The port number of the outgoing mail server.
User Name The user name for the email account. In exceptional cases a user name may not be required. For example if you are running a private email server on a private network.
Password The email password used to sign into the mail account.

Configure the SMTP Connector Tag

To configure the SMTP Connector Tag:

1. Enter the information from your email provider into the SMTP Connector Tag configuration properties:

HostName The host name of the outgoing mail server.
PortNumber The port number of the outgoing mail server.
Password The email password used to sign into the mail account. Leave blank if not required.
UserName The user name for the email account. Leave blank if not required.

2. Enter a suitable from email address in the FromAddress field.

Using the GmailTM webmail service

To send emails from Fernhill SCADA using the GmailTM webmail service use this configuration:

HostName smtp.gmail.com
PortNumber 587
UserName Your gmail account name
Password Your password

You also need configure Gmail to accept connections from less secure apps.

To do this:

  1. Sign into your GoogleTM account.
  2. Click on My Account.
  3. Click on the Sign-in & security panel.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page.
  5. Set Allow less secure apps to ON.

After you make this change, you will receive a message with the subject line "Access for less secure apps has been turned on".

Testing the SMTP Connector Tag

You can test the SMTP connector tag using the Configuration Tool:

  1. Right click the SMTP Connector Tag in the Tag Window.
  2. From the Context Menu select Send message to.
  3. Enter test information in the To, Subject and Message fields.
  4. Press OK.
  5. Watch the status of the SMTP Connector Tag in the Tag Status Tab

If configured correctly, the SMTP Connector Tag will send the message and remain connected to the SMTP Server for a few seconds. While connected, the Tag Status Tab should show:

Note: While online the Encryption and Authentication fields show the negotiated level of security and authentication with the SMTP Server.

The most common issue connecting to an SMTP Server is an authentication failure. When this happens the SMTP Connector Tag status shows:

Note: The exact error shown varies between different SMTP Servers.
